Wheel chocks are indispensable for the safety of every professional driver. The regulations for the use of wheel chocks or stop blocks differ from country to country. Companies can also impose their own regulations for the use of stop blocks during loading and unloading within the framework of their health and safety policy. After all, practice shows that the use of the parking brake alone is not always sufficient to prevent unintentional movement of a vehicle when, for example, forklift trucks drive in and out of a trailer for loading or unloading.
The transport of dangerous goods must follow the so-called ADR regulations. These regulations make the use of wheel chocks mandatory when loading and unloading, but also when parking.
The number of wheel chocks that must be available per vehicle varies from country to country. In general, however, it can be stated that two wedges must be provided for the towing vehicle and two for the trailer. The chocks should be immediately available for emergency use. That is why most trucks, tractors and trailers are equipped with special holders for storing wheel chocks.
There is no international law that determines by whom and when stop blocks should be used. In many countries they are mandatory from a permitted weight of 4 tons or more. In Germany, wheel chocks are even mandatory for every two-axled trailer with a permissible weight of more than 750 kg.
It is therefore highly recommended to consult the applicable local rules.
Wheel chocks are indispensable, not only to respect the legislation, but also to ensure everyone's safety and that of the load.
